Texas Platters BY AUSTIN CHRONICLES CHASE HOFFBERGER

The future is now for Austin hip-hop, and it's obvious on Zeale's new mixtape, Haterz and Robotz, the local MC's most complete collection to date. Boosted by the masterful precision of DJ Rapid Ric, the slick-talking Zeale raps his way through an even mix of originals and sampled cuts, all heavy on the "Retrozpect." Team Zeale/Phranchyze staples – custom shoes and clever shoot-downs – remain intact ("Brand New," "Undefined Tranzmizzion"), but Haterz soars on heartfelt tributes ("Rain") and a captivating Pink Floyd mix-up splitting the "Dull Dayz." South Austin's COD shows no fear breaking out of the "Citylimits," pulling tracks inspired by 9th Wonder's camp ("Let's Go") and the dirty dirty ("Wheel Spin") on this month's Ova the Stove, Volume 3 street release. Beats are only half the story on this diverse collection, which finds COD's four rhyme slingers one-upping one another on the epic "No Mo." Lamenting it's "time for George Bush to step aside," Choszen's Welcome to the Greene Party (Sixth Street Music) sets itself apart as politically conscious rap that can still get crunk on "Sixth Street." Lyrics about bipartisan corruption lose weight beside "I'm lovin' the way that you move" hooks, making Greene Party a better fit for Esther's Follies than Emo's. Pflugerville's K.J. Hines keeps it all business on the re-release of 2006's Capital City, out this round on Dap Records. The 18-year-old cuts it slow on "Dirty Place" but not before taking control of lead track "I Own This." Do as he says: "Move With It

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT! Hip-Hop at SXSW 2009
OK First let me say ALL THIS INFO COULD CHANGE! Times, names, clubs, dates, whatever, everything you see below here is subject to change and a lot of it probably will.

Also, THIS is not everything. I have a few shows we are still nailing down details for and those will be announced asap. I need a couple more venues in order to do what I want to do with these shows and that is the hold up. If we have discussed a show and you don't see it here, do not even trip. It is in the works.

You of course can get more and better information all the time on www.sxsw.com

If you DO NOT see your name on this list that DOES NOT mean that you are not performing. If I told you that you were, you probably are, I just need to lock you in somewhere.

If you HAVE NOT submitted an application to perform, please DO NOT ask me to perform. We are booked. We have no room for any new entries SO PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME.

I feel bad when I can't get all of my people on, but this is an international festival, one of the biggest in the world, and it's my job, so no, I can't get all my people on.

So yeah, go to www.sxsw.com and register now!

ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE! DON'T START TRIPPIN'!

AUSTINHIPHOPSCENE.COM INTERVIEWS DA C.O.D

AHHS recently got a chance to sit down with Da C.O.D. in between their busy schedule. Thanks for taking the time! Read on to find out why Da C.O.D. says you gotta mind your own business!

AHHS: Can you give your fans a quick bio of yourself?

Da C.O.D.: Da C.O.D. consist of 4 uniquely and equally gifted MC's from the Southside of ATX. I, Mr Greezo been holding down Slaughter and Brodie lane way before it was cool for rappers to put it in their rhymes. S.Dot and Lil J both met and went to elementary school in the 0-4. Tuk-da-Gat is from Bastrop originally before he started called Austin home. We all came together out of necessity for good music, weed, of course $ and love for the Southside!!!

AHHS: Which is your latest CD? and how do you think it differs from your previous works?

Da C.O.D.: Feb 24th 2009 Ova Da Stove volume 3. Mixed by the infamous DJ Rapid Ric. This new street album just shows the natural progression of greatness. If you been following the series this is a definite must have. We cover all bases on this one and of course as with any C.O.D. release its gonna be a few rappers feelings getting hurt as well. We got records on there for the ladies, the boys in the trap or my niggas going to school. If you working three jobs to get thru the this bitch ass recession we got something on there for you as well.

AHHS: What gives you inspiration and how does that transpire into your music?

Da C.O.D.: We all have been thru alot of different life experiences that our fans hear in our music. These day to day trials is what definitely influences our art. For example Lil J's has been raising his son since he was 16. You can imagine the kind of stress that can cause a young nigga. We keep it real and its genuine entertainment for our fans.

AHHS: Which artists inspire you the most? and why?

Da C.O.D.: Of course all the legends that goes with out saying.. Scarface Devin UGK 8ball MJG Outkast The whole SUC and we also bang alot of East and West coast music. We on The Lox heavy Nas Jay Z C-Bo -X-Raided. People hear our shit and they don't think we're from Texas because our sound doesn't resemble the prototypical "Texas Sound" which hurt us at first but now I think its helping.

AHHS: What has kept you from moving to cities with larger markets? especially since it's only been recently that Houston has blown up.

Da C.O.D.: Well the plan was simple. Vol.1 was for the hoods to let them know we coming. Vol 2. was more for the city to let them know some cats from the south was coming. Now with Vol.3 we are looking at the state. Now you'll see us booking alot of shows in small towns like Odessa all the way to the cities like Dallas and Houston. Next we drop the album and we coming for world domination!!!!!

AHHS: How do you see the scene locally? and where do you see it going?

Da C.O.D.: The local scene is very healthy. I remember when there was only Bavu Blakes, MC Overlord and Smackola. They were really the only ones dropping good quality product. Then around 2005 James Dean and The Backroom was poppin and thats when you really started to see the scene come into its own. Now you got these young niggas coming up and they are hungry and beasting. I feel within the next 2 years something very big is going to happen for central Texas.

AHHS: What is your favorite venue to perform at? and why?

Da C.O.D.: Well we are kind of partial to Karma Lounge because that where we first really started to get it in at. The Music Hall is def the best venue the I've performed at because the sound system was on point and that bitch was packed!!!

AHHS: Can you give us 3 of your most favorite local artists?

Da C.O.D.: You know this ain't really hard.. S. Dot Lil J and Tuk-Da-Gat.... Naw serious I know Ima leave someone out but I gotta go with Gutta from Above All, Gerald G the Monsta, and Southbound Lyrical Beasts

AHHS: What is the best piece of advice that someone in the industry has given you?

Da C.O.D.: Mind your own business cuz if you don't someone else will!!!!!!

AHHS: And a more light-hearted question: Have you seen a correlation between your level of success and quality of hoes?

Da C.O.D.: LOL!!! You know I don't know about the quality but def the quantity!!!!

AHHS: Any parting words?

CREW54 CAPTURES SOME FOOTAGE FROM THE Z-RO SHOW FEB.7TH @SPIROS

Continuing our grind as the most versatile AND entertaining video blog out there, we keep it moving this week checking out the King of the Ghetto, Z-Ro, at Spiros. Props to the homie Tanner and James Dean for the good look.
There were a lot of folks in the house, and couple of openers got to do their thang. Da C.O.D. continued their rapid rise, while holding it down for Austin and stealing the show. Hot 93.3's Mimi Mendez held down the hosting duties, while DJ Wes Sanders kept the music going all night. Houston OG K-Rino dropped some real knowledge (check below for more exclusive footage), and through the drama Z-ro gave his fans what they wanted.
